About the Ri and the role

The Royal Institution (Ri) is an independent charity which has been connecting people with science for over 200 years. Founded in 1799 through the wonderful generosity of 58 patrons, to this day we remain based in our original, magnificent, Georgian home in central London and have inspired generations of scientists over the years whose discoveries have helped shape our modern world. Our multi-purpose building is open to the public as a museum, acts as a busy events venue, and provides office accommodation for the Ri team and commercial tenants.

The Ri has a clear vision that ‘Science is for Everyone’ and it is our belief that everyone should have equitable access to science. Through our packed event programme available in person or online, our UK schools outreach and social impact initiatives, and our global digital reach including over 1.5m YouTube subscribers we achieve our mission by connecting people with scientists to explore science together.

The Head of Property and Facilities leads the management and maintenance of our Grade I listed building and is responsible for the strategic management and effective delivery of facilities services at the Ri to ensure a safe and seamless service for all building users including staff, visitors, clients, audiences and tenants. As the successful applicant, you will be responsible for ensuring that the physical environment is fit for purpose in terms of premises, facilities, health & safety and office accommodation in order to deliver successful staff performance and excellent customer service. You will optimise the use of space to maximise financial returns through venue hire, hospitality and commercial tenants.

You will also support the Front of House and Buildings Coordinator to manage a variety of outsourced and contracted services to ensure the Ri receives the best value for money, and maintains beneficial partnership arrangements, so that all building users experience a seamless service. You are responsible for managing the Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM), cleaning and security contracts, and utilities within an allocated budget. You must apply best practice to improve efficiency by reducing operating costs while increasing productivity and developing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, Ri tenants and staff.

About you

Do you have expertise in building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and a commitment to health and safety excellence?

Are you a strategic and innovative thinker, with excellent interpersonal and team leadership qualities?

As the successful candidate you will be self-motivated with the ability to balance strategic thinking with trouble-shooting and attention to detail.  The ability to stay calm in challenging situations and to influence and build relationships at all levels of the organisation will be essential.
