ExpeRimental: Science at home
ExpeRimental is a series of short films that make it fun, easy and cheap to do science at home with children aged 4 to 10. Our films give you lots of ideas for kids’ activities that will help you explore the world around you, question and experiment together. We’ll show you how to do the activity and how to make sure adults and children get the most out of it. Tell us how you get on and share your photos and any funny things your kids say!
You can find the films, info sheets and other content on our Facebook ExpeRimental page too.
Family Fun Days
Family Fun Days are Saturday events to get the whole family excited about science. They run a few times a year, from 11am to 4pm. Drop in anytime to enjoy the short talks in our famous theatre and get stuck in to experiments, creative activities and making things to take home. Suitable for children aged 6 - 12, though older and younger siblings and friends are also very welcome. Community groups are also very welcome.
We've got activities on for everyone to do together.
- Please note though, we don't have any childcare facilities, so you'll need to stay with your kids at all times.
- The day is fully flexible, so you can drop in for 30 minutes, or stay for the whole five hours.
- Most people tell us that they find there's enough here to fill at least three hours.

Museum
In our museum you can explore the world-changing science that's happened at the Ri since 1799. The displays are spread across three floors of the Ri building.
We also have a downloadable trail (coming soon) to complete as you go round the museum.
Facilities
The Ri has a family friendly cafe to grab lunch or a drink and snack.
We also have unisex baby change facilities.
Mathematics and engineering workshops
These workshops are hands-on and interactive sessions led by top experts from academia and industry, based on the nationwide programme of Ri masterclasses. Each session will be based around a particular topic in maths or engineering.
Fantastic for families, but check the age guidelines in the event listing. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. Children outside the recommended age range are welcome, but the level of the material may not be suitable for them.

Evening family events
We put on a number of fun events each year specifically for family groups. These are held in the theatre, and are brought to life with demonstrations and audience interaction. Topics range from the science of fireworks to the challenges of climbing Everest.
