Masterclasses are extracurricular workshops designed to inspire and engage students in exploring STEM concepts reaching beyond the curriculum. Teachers can nominate children who show a particular aptitude or enthusiasm for STEM subjects (or likelihood to benefit from further opportunities) for Ri Masterclasses, which offer a deeper investigation and appreciation of mathematics or computer science.
Through hands-on activities and interactive sessions in small groups, students develop a deeper understanding of mathematics or computer science, building confidence and problem-solving skills and learning from inspiring role models.
Students are specifically identified by teachers or community leaders as those most likely to benefit from deeper engagement and who are unable to access other opportunities due to financial or other barriers. Masterclasses consist of six two-hour sessions, which provide unique opportunities for students to connect with scientists and industry experts, as well as likeminded children, motivating them to enjoy and continue their journey in STEM. Series are tailored for primary and secondary school students and are designed to show that subjects can be exciting and fulfilling, and that the adults and volunteers supporting their learning are relatable and interesting as role models!
In 2024, the programme delivered 40,000+ engagement hours to 4,451 students across 611 sessions, with a demand to do more. Masterclasses are delivered across the UK, led by a passionate team and supported by a network of volunteers, many of whom have been participants themselves across the programme’s 40-year history. Masterclasses can be life changing and are life affirming; many alumni have gone on to pursue careers in or enabled by STEM.
