The YSC is an interactive and imaginative laboratory at the heart of the Ri, inspiring students to explore science outside the classroom. For students that can face significant barriers to accessing quality science education, the YSC offers an unparalleled opportunity to spark curiosity.
With over 4,000 students visiting annually, we provide hands-on experiences and specialist equipment that expand understanding and foster a love of learning. Throughout the year, schools and parents book children onto workshops designed to spark wonder and passion in science and conduct experiments beyond the capabilities of a typical school experience.
Since launching in 2009 with support from L’Oréal, the YSC has inspired over 35,000 children; by supporting the YSC, you can bring science to life and offer young people a fascinating insight into the reality of life as a scientist or engineer. Current workshops cover a range of topics including molecular biology, chemistry, and physics, and are designed to foster critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Demand outstrips capacity each year. To reach our growth goals and update facilities, new funding is essential. Supporters will help to sustain a uniquely special space in a historic location, and funding will not only keep the lights on but could help to increase the number of groups that visit, alter the space to enable a greater range of topics, adapt equipment to suit young people with additional needs and develop exciting new workshop content.
For every class group that has this special opportunity, there are many more who don’t. Our Science in Schools (SiS) programme takes demonstration-centric, curriculum-linked content straight into the schools most in need, spreading the magic of Ri science content far and wide.
